Yaya ba kami ng mga Estudyante? Bahala sila sa buhay nila — UP Professor

The last few days, the news of the Department of National Defense (DND) dismissal of its agreement with the University of the Philippines (UP) regarding the ban on s0ldiers being available in the university campus without the permission of the school administration has been viral in the social media.

“The agreement has become obsolete. University of the Philippines has become the breeding ground of intransigent individuals and groups whose extremist beliefs have inveigled students to join their ranks to f!ght against the government. The Department of National Defense will neither renege nor shirk on its duty to protect the rights of the majority,” according Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

 

This move by Defense Secretary Lorenzana has been criticized by some UP officials. Lorenzana, on the other hand, stood on his decision. According to the secretary, the UP leaders should explain why some students are dy!ng in the f!ghting between the mil!tary and the New people’s Army (NpA).

UP Professor Dr. Clarita Carlos lambasted the statement of Sec. Lorenzana. According to Carlos, Lorenzana questioned the UP's leadership.

“Why would he (Sec. Lorenzana) oblige UP to explain to him why certain of our graduates d!ed during mil!tary encounters? Yaya ba kami ng mga estudyante? 54 years na akong nagtuturo eh, wala akong ni-YAYA diyan sa mga estudyante. Bahala ka diyan sa buhay mo. ‘Yan ang pinili mong path ng future mo. Kung mama*tay ka diyan, sino ang may kasalanan,” said Carlos.
