Because of this, Senator Risa Hontiveros expressed her opinion on the issue.
Watch the Video:
According to a report by ABS-CBN news, Hontiveros said that the next leader of the Education Department has to be an education expert.
“I don’t know what the incoming, the presumptive vice president’s track record is in education. I would have guessed other education experts to helm that important department,” said Hontiveros. “Napakahalaga sana… na ang hahawak ng education department—ang magpapatupad nung kaka-sponsor lang namin sa Senado na Education Commission II, ang tutugon sa iba’t ibang problemang sa ating namuong education crisis pre-pandemic up to during the pandemic until now—ay isang education expert,” added the lady senator.
Meanwhile, the current DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones had earlier welcomed Sara Duterte. According to Briones, she believes that the next incumbent will continue what they started for the department.
“I welcome the announcement by Presidential frontrunner Bongbong Marcos that incoming Vice President Sara Duterte will concurrently serve as Department of Education Secretary. We are confident that DepEd will be in able hands and anticipate a continuity” said Briones.
Read the reaction from the netizens on the statement of Senator Risa Hontiveros to the Department of Education Secretary issue:
Mr. Simsimi: I somehow agree and dont agree with Hontiveros. We need an expert to lead such departments, but with that reasoning, Hontiveros should also not be a senator and a lawmaker, since she is not a lawyer and not an expert on that field. She's a journalist.
Bernadette Alano: Having an active opposition is vital and cruci@l to having healthy government. Uniteam’s platforms has been generally laid out on their websites, their channels and people who are genuinely interested on knowing them can easily access these. BBM mentioned having a New World order soon following the situation between Ukr@ine and Russi@ affecting every country including the Philippines. Having a specific ready platform for every issue in the country is good however if a new world order is in place, changes will have to be made again in terms of economic policies etc. He is known to be very careful in his words as they can be used against him esp now that all eyes are on him. I can completely understand how these platforms are yet to be discussed specifically when his term officially commences.
Inhinyerong Pinoy: Compared to past elections post Marcos Era, there were undeniably more vi0lence and k1llings. Until now, I believe this is by far the cleanest and surprisingly overwhelming participation from the masses. Kudos to the Philippines, democracy is indeed alive. The masses had spoken. For the opposition, I hope they move on, unite and be part of the solution.
M.A. Please judge her based on performance objectively
J. M: So it was ok for Hontiveros, her being a journalist na maging leader ng Phil Health kahit di sha doctor, health management expert or anything that has to do with health but not ok for Mam Sara to lead DepEd? What kind of standard is that? Also wala Shang saklaw sa kung sino ang i a appoint ni President Marcos sa gabinete niya kahit senador pa sha, tama si Mam Sara, maging busy na lang sya sa pag thank you dun sa mga bumoto sa kanya at binigyan sya ng chance na tumulong sa pag unlad ng bansa.
