The controversial decision of the jurors in the gold medal match between Philippine Player Nesthy Petecio and Sena Irie of Japan was viral on social media today.
It will be recalled that Irie won the gold medal after she was favored by the jurors via unanimous decision. The score between Petecio and Irie was very close but even though their score was so close, not a single jury favored the Philippine Player Petecio.
Because of this, many netizens doubt the result of the said match and believe that it was ‘cooked’ in favor of the Japanese who is the host country of the Olympics.
Some netizens expressed their opinion about the match and said they were not convinced of the jury’s decision. “What’s more heartbreaking is the fact that her performance wasn’t impressive. Dude, she was hugging nesthy all the time. Salamat sa luto Tokyo,” tweeted @joehanniebear.
“NESTHY PETECIO DESERVES THIS GOLD. NO ONE CAN CHANGE MY MIND. THAT 2ND AND 3RD ROUNDS ARE DEFINITELY HERS.” tweeted @danielleAmante.
Even Sports Journalist and Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Member Ryan Songalia believes Petecio should have won the f1ght. “Sena Irie of Japan wins the inaugural women’s featherweight gold medal with a unanimous decision over Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines. The scoring of that first round, where all 5 judges scored it for the home f1ghter despite Petecio controlling it, was a d1sgrace,” said @RyanSongalia.
But there are some netizens who are also in favored Japan. “Lots of salty comments about the outcome. as much as we want the gold medal for nesthy, the japanese deserved the win. she was more aggr3ssive and landed more pnches. the scores were fair; there’s no “luto”, and it was not a “hometown advantage decision” lol,” tweeted @clarisajoyce
“Eto na naman tayo sa “luto” at “dinaya” mentality. I’ve been rooting for Nesthy too, but the Japanese was the better boxer and she deserved the gold medal in that round. Problem is mismong local commentators natin ay sore l0sers themselves.” added @giodrocketman.
This is the first silver medal won by the Philippines in 25 years. The last to win silver for boxing was Onyok Velasco who was also believed by some netizens to have been ch3ated.
